Stein on Stein: A Retrospective of the Theatre of Peter Stein
On Friday, June 6th, Toronto theatre artists and theatre-goers will have the chance to meet one of the legends of contemporary theatre and opera, German director Peter Stein. In a career spanning more than four decades, his work has been acclaimed around the world. From his first production, Edward Bond’s Saved in 1967, through landmark stagings of Peer Gynt, As You Like It, The Oresteia, and The Three Sisters at Berlin’s Schaubühne Theatre (which he ran from 1970 to 1985), Stein established himself as one of Europe’s most brilliant directors. And his more recent work, including Hamlet in Moscow, a 22-hour Faust in Hannover, and productions of both Schiller’s Wallenstein and Shakespeare’s King Lear in Berlin and Vienna respectively, demonstrate his continued brilliance.
Stein will discuss his career and his ideas on theatre in conversation with Buddies in Bad Times’ Artistic Director Brendan Healy at the Theatre Centre on Friday, June 6th at 8 p.m. As part of the conversation, excerpts from several of Stein’s most notable productions will be screened.
Date: June 6 @8PM
Venue: The Theatre Centre, 1115 Queen Street West
Admission: Free

The University of Toronto presents:
Faust Fantasia
Concert Recital for Voice and Piano (with English surtitles)
Based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust I
Music: Arturo Annecchino
Piano: Giovanni Vialetti
Voice: Peter Stein
Peter Stein’s millennial staging of Goethe’s Faust I and II for the Hanover Expo 2000, as well as Berlin and Vienna, took two years to produce and twenty one hours to perform, and involved over thirty performers along with a custom built performance space. The unique blend of artistic vision, production values and economic logistics in this epic presentation of Goethe’s complete poem of 12,000 verses made for a singular, unrepeatable event that is now part of theatre history.
How can the spirit and memory of such a work be kept alive? Following the idea of Arturo Annecchino, the composer of the production's musical score and Peter Stein’s regular collaborator, Faust Fantasia evokes the spirit of the original performance by once again entering into dialogue with Goethe’s tragic drama, this time in an intimate recital for voice and piano, with Stein as the narrator and Giovanni Vialetti on the piano. With the words of Faust, Mephistopheles and Gretchen either spoken or sung to the accompaniment of music or without it, audiences are given a rare glimpse at the poetic beauty of one of the crowning jewels of German literature. Humbler in scope than its predecessor, Faust Fantasia is no less of an achievement in reaching a height of expression that resonates long after its performance ends.
